A series of studies were conducted. Subjects either recalled a typical day in their romantic relationship or described a time when they felt powerful in relation to their partner. Then the participants wrote a sexual fantasy about someone and chose a potential partner based on photographs of strangers. In other studies, subjects, including romantic couples, wrote about the dynamics of their perception of their strength and the value of their partner by day.

Shown: if a romantic partner perceives himself or herself as stronger, then he or she is more likely to show romantic interest in other people, has more sexual fantasies about others and a desire to interact with others. Also, if the perception of one's strength and power in a relationship is higher, then the perception of one's value as a romantic partner is higher.
