Does high emotional intelligence mean less envy?
Does high emotional intelligence mean less envy?
Sample: 442 participants, predominantly women with an average age of 40 years.
The participants completed four tasks involving emotionally complex situations. For example, they indicated how they overcome feelings of guilt or build trust. Additionally, their propensity for benign and malicious envy was assessed using a questionnaire.
Shown: on average, all participants are more prone to benign envy (envy as a motive for self-improvement) than to malicious envy. The ability to regulate emotions is positively associated with benign envy, but not with malicious envy, nor with simply lower levels of envy. A high ability to regulate emotions leads to envy becoming constructive. Benign envy is more common among those with high self-esteem, while malicious envy is more common among those with anxious attachment. Both types of envy are less common in older people.
