An umbrella review on the connection between physical exercise and cognitive functions has been released.
Sample: 133 systematic reviews, including 2 724 studies with 258 000 subjects.
The authors analyzed reviews of studies that examined the link between physical activity and cognitive functions. The participants ranged from 7 to 89 years old, including conditionally healthy subjects, as well as people with cognitive impairments, mental and neurological disorders.
Shown: physical activity has a small or moderate effect on cognitive functions, memory, and executive functions. The effect is stronger in children and adolescents, and weaker in adults and the elderly. The strongest effect is seen in people with ADHD (but only in executive functions). The greatest effect from activities is seen in the first few months. The intensity of the exercises is not crucial.
