Are we aging like our grandparents?
Are we aging like our grandparents?
Sample: 26 121 English and Chinese over 60 years old.
Subjects were assessed for locomotor abilities (walking speed, getting up from a chair, balance), cognitive abilities, sensory abilities, psychological characteristics (sleep, symptoms of depression) and vitality (grip strength, exhaled volume, hemoglobin).
Shown: older people today demonstrate significantly better physical and cognitive functioning than people from previous generations at the same age. A significant effect occurs every 10 years. This is facilitated by improvements in education, nutrition, sanitation and medical care. However, new problems are emerging, such as obesity, which over time can reverse these positive trends in aging.
