Sample: 162 tenth-grade students.

Participants were grouped into trios and worked on solving a high-stakes social issue (press freedom, oil extraction regulation, environmental concerns, etc.). The solutions generated were analyzed by qualified observers. All participants were assessed for emotional intelligence (EI) using the MSCEIT test and evaluated on the Big Five.

Shown: the group EI of the trios (i.e., the average EI of the trio) was a strong predictor of team effectiveness. These trios produced higher-quality solutions, exchanged ideas more constructively, and communicated in a friendlier manner. Trios with higher average neuroticism scores also performed better - possibly due to more thorough preparation of their solutions. Group extraversion, on the other hand, was linked to problematic communication.
