How ADHD affects a person’s life?
Sample: 1 265 participants born in 1977 in a city in New Zealand.
Participants were assessed annually from birth to age 16, and then every few years until age 40.
Shown: among the 25% of participants with the most pronounced ADHD symptoms, diagnosed in adolescence, the following was observed later in life - higher rates of smoking, alcohol and cannabis use, greater likelihood of meeting criteria for major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders, presence of suicidal thoughts, higher rates of arrest, more frequent violent and property crimes, higher unemployment, lower likelihood of owning property and lower earnings compared to participants with mild or no ADHD symptoms. Throughout the study, only 5 participants were prescribed ADHD medication.
