How do cats recognize their owners?

Sample: 30 domestic cats.

The cats were presented with three scents in vials - an empty vial with no scent, a vial with the scent of the owner, and a vial with the scent of a stranger. Additionally, subjective reports from the animals' owners about the cats' behavior were collected.

Shown: cats spend more time sniffing the scent of a stranger than the scent of their owner, suggesting that they can identify familiar people by scent alone. Cats initially sniffed unknown scents more often with their right nostril but later switched to the left nostril as they became more familiar with the scent, which is related to the processing of scents by different hemispheres of the brain. Personality traits were also identified, but only in male cats whose behavior was assessed by owners as neurotic (i.e., not calm) - they were more likely to sniff each vial repeatedly.
