Sample: 309 subjects aged 62-70 years.
Participants were divided into three groups - intensive training (heavy weightlifting three times per week), moderate training (several sessions during the week, including at home on their own), and a group without physical exercise. All groups engaged in exercises for one year and underwent brain scanning.
Shown: intensive training - improvement in connections in the prefrontal regions. In the intensive and moderate groups, a significant reduction in the biological age of the brain after one year of training - the effect persists even after two years. A correlation was found between an increase in leg strength (a standard measure of physical fitness) and a reduction in brain age, but the effect is moderate and only in the moderate training group, not the intensive one.
