Participants were assessed eight times from 2021 to 2024. The severity of gambling addiction was evaluated, and the presence of a family member or close friend with gambling problems was noted.

Shown: having a family member or close friend with gambling problems predicts an increase in one’s own gambling issues. However, if family relationships are generally strong and supportive, the negative impact of a relative with a gambling addiction is significantly reduced. A similar effect does not apply to friends - meaning, strong emotional bonds with friends do not reduce the risk of developing gambling problems from a friend with a gambling addiction.
