Participants were shown 109 images of people's faces - all images were photographs of real people. They were then asked to select the photographs that, in their opinion, were generated by AI.

Shown: 44% of the images were identified by participants as AI-generated. No objective characteristics of the photographs were found that would lead to an image being assessed as AI-generated, meaning the choice was based on subjective evaluations. It is likely that participants can be easily made to believe that real images are AI-generated. Male participants were more likely to consider images of faces they found attractive as real. Female participants were more likely to consider images of faces they found either attractive or unattractive as real.
