Mass shootings appear to have an indirect impact on alcohol consumption.
Sample: data on mass shootings and alcohol sales across the United States from 35 000 retail outlets for the years 2006-2019. The data covers more than half of the alcohol sales in the USA.
The authors compared alcohol sales before and after mass shootings.
Shown: Alcohol sales increase in regions where mass shootings occur, and this increase persists for at least two years. On average, alcohol sales increase by approximately 3.5%. The rise in alcohol purchases was much stronger when mass shootings occurred in public places rather than in private homes. It seems that after a mass shooting, there is indirect trauma to the population, including a decrease in the sense of safety and security.
