Mental disorder of a parent affects the cognitive sphere of the child?
Mental disorder of a parent affects the cognitive sphere of the child?
Sample: 125 791 male youths.
At age 18, participants underwent an assessment of cognitive abilities. Additionally, records of parental psychiatric disorders were searched for, as well as other difficulties the subjects faced in childhood - health problems of relatives, socioeconomic problems, and family instability.
Shown: 5.3% of the subjects have one parent with a mental disorder. If one parent has a mental disorder, then at age 18 the subject has lower scores on cognitive tests (extremely small effect). If the child faced one or two difficulties, then in the presence of a parent with a mental disorder the effect remains, but if there are three or more difficulties, the effect disappears - such subjects have lower results on cognitive tests regardless of the presence of a parent with a disorder.
No bait for a like because the topic is sad.
