Do you ever get chills when listening to music?
Sample: 15 606 adults from the Netherlands (aged 18–96) with available DNA data.
Participants indicated whether they experience chills when reading poetry, viewing art, or listening to their favorite music.
Shown: the tendency to get chills is partially determined by genetics. When comparing relatives, family similarity accounts for about 24% of the differences for chills from art/poetry and 29% for music. Those who frequently experience chills from music also tend to experience them from art or poetry, and some of the hereditary causes for these two reactions overlap. A genetic score for openness to experience (i.e., a person’s genetic predisposition to this personality trait) is also linked to chills, but the contribution is very small.
