Sample: 58 individuals with a fear of spiders, 59 spider experts (such as biologists who have completed a course in arachnology), and 52 control subjects who do not fear spiders. All participants did not fear butterflies and wasps.

Participants were shown 90 images of spiders, butterflies and wasps. They then rated the size of spiders, butterflies, and wasps on a scale from '0' to '10' compared to a fly.

Shown: participants who feared spiders significantly overestimated the size of spiders compared to butterflies and wasps. Experts accurately judged the sizes of spiders, butterflies, and wasps. The control group only erred in indicating the size of spiders and butterflies as the same (in reality, butterflies are larger). Individuals who feared spiders rated spiders as more unpleasant than butterflies or wasps. Experts indicated a low level of unpleasantness for spiders, butterflies, and wasps. The control group found spiders slightly more unpleasant than butterflies and wasps.
