Early research has repeatedly shown that conservatives rate their mental health significantly better than liberals.
Early research has repeatedly shown that conservatives rate their mental health significantly better than liberals.
But what if we change the wording of the question? Sample: 61 000 participants.
60 500 participants rated their mental health on a five-point scale (they were given the task phrasing with the term "mental health"). The remaining 500 participants completed a similar task, but the phrase "mental health" was replaced with "overall mood".
Shown: when the phrase "mental health" is used, the findings are consistent with previous studies - conservatives report better results than liberals. However, if "overall mood" is used instead of "mental health", the gap disappears, and the differences are statistically insignificant. It appears that the phrase "mental health" is socially stigmatized and politically charged.
Like if you might consider yourself mentally healthy but constantly find yourself in a bad overall mood.
