Receiving a diagnosis has been linked to immediate psychological relief.
Sample: review article, 21 sources.
The review is based on clinical anecdotes, folklore, and emerging research. Examples of studies are provided in which patients were asked about their emotional and psychological responses to receiving a clinical diagnosis.
Shown: the act of diagnosis itself can be therapeutic, a phenomenon termed the “Rumpelstiltskin effect”. Patients who received a diagnosis reported reduced self-blame, increased social acceptance, and a sense of control over previously confusing or stigmatized experiences. The effect is observed across various conditions and is influenced by the way the diagnosis is delivered. The psychological impact of diagnosis and the ritual of naming can reinforce each other over time. Systematic empirical studies on the frequency and magnitude of the effect are lacking.
