What are the characteristics of children who aspire to science?
Sample: 1 240 children aged 11-14.
Participants were assessed for their motivation to study science: whether they expect success from doing science, assessed the usefulness of science and the costs that they think will be required to do science. In addition, children were assessed for their achievements in science.
Shown: best results in science are shown by children who are characterized by high expectations from doing science, assess science as a useful activity and believe that science will require little effort. This work identified two problem groups: children from economically disadvantaged families and girls - they believe that doing science will require high costs (effort, expenses, emotional consequences).
My opinion: it seems that it is high time to do something so that science does not seem like a closed sacred temple, the entrance to which is available only to the chosen ones.
Like if prayer to God helps you reduce the costs of studying science.
